
Local Teens Vie for the Gold and the chance to go to Disney World
The Long Beach Branch of the NAACP hosted the NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition at Renaissance High School located at 835 East 8th St. in Long Beach. Over 75 teenagers from across the city competed in 25 categories in the sciences, humanities, entrepreneurship, visual and performing arts.
“The Olympics of the Mind is a positive interaction between our youth and the adult professionals from our communities” said Charles D. Smith, ACT-SO Chairman.
Local gold winners proceeded to the National ACT-SO competition in Orlando, Floridato compete against nearly 1,000 participants. On the national level, participants came from all over the country to win the coveted gold, silver, and bronze. In addition to winning a medal, national winners took home cash prizes totaling over $50,000 in scholarships and other awards including laptop computers.
ACT-SO, a NAACP sponsored program, was founded by renowned author and journalist Vernon Jarrett. This year long enrichment program is designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among high school students.
