I Remember When, A Town Named Hope, Arkansas

Stories From the Past
In her premier book, Hope, Arkansas native Autrilla Scott uses humor, realism, and thought provoking images to illicit joy and sadness and an all round good time. It’s a must-have for fans of realistic short stories told from a Southern perspective and an African American point of view.

I Remember When, A Town Named Hope, Arkansas
Growing up in Hope, Arkansas was an experience that compares to nothing else I have ever done in my life. It laid the foundation for who I am today and taught me many valuable lessons about family, life, love, and faith. To order the books go to www.bbotw.com or call toll free: (877) BUY-BOOK

Ivan J. Houston, Black Warriors: The Buffalo Soldiers of World War II

Ivan J. Houston, December 1944

No member of Combat Team 370 of the 92nd (“Buffalo”) Division has ever forgotten the night of August 23, 1944, when the team prepared to enter combat for the first time. This adventure along the banks of the Arno River was no training exercise: it was war. The regimental combat team consisted of 4,000 men, mostly southern Negroes of modest education and a small complement of college men, including author Ivan J. Houston, who was nineteen years old.
Black Warriors: The Buffalo Soldiers of World War II is Houston’s recollection of their service, drawn from a minute-by-minute journal it was his duty to keep. The men of the 3rd Battalion, 370th Regiment Combat Team, 92nd Infantry Division of the US Fifth Army were brothers in a segregated army, warring not only against the awesome power of the Nazi war machine but against racism and the widely held belief that they were not up to the task. Their achievements proved otherwise. For more information go to www.blackwarriorsbook.com

Pamela Hale-Burns, Come Out from Among Them

Excerpt from back cover

What exactly does it mean to come out from among the word? As children of the Almighty God, we are to be separate. We are called to share what Christ did for the world when he died on the cross for their sins and was raised again with all power in his hand. Our separation should lead others to Christ. When we are separate, our lifestyle stands out. I pray you are encouraged to “Come out from Among them and be Separate”

Judge Kevin D. Filer, Race IPSA Loquitur: A Poetic Diary of My Journey from Compton to the Los Angeles Superior Court Bench

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kelvin D. Filer, was “born, raised, and educated in Compton, California.” Judge Filer insists on emphasizing that he is from Compton because, historically, we tend to hear only negative things about the city. His message is not one of “look at me" - rather to tell the students and young people in Compton that if I made it, so can you. After graduating from Compton High School in 1973, he went to the University of California at Santa Cruz where he graduated with “college honors”. He subsequently received his Juris Doctorate degree from UC Berkeley. In 1980, Judge Filer started practicing law as a Deputy State Public Defender for two years. In 1982 he opened his own private law practice. In July 1993, he became commissioner for the Compton Municipal Court and later served as the Superior Court Commissioner. In 2002, Governor Gray Davis appointed him as a judge of the Superior Court in Los Angeles. To purchase his book, contact Xlibris Corporation. The LB NAACP Celebrating History

Tuskegee Airmen

The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of a group of African American pilots who fought in World War II. Formally, they were the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the US Army Air Corps. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces. During WWII, African Americans in many US states still were subject to the Jim Crow laws. The American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen we subject to racial discrimination, both within and outside the army. Despite these adversities, they trained and flew with distinction. When the pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group painted the tails of their P-51's red, the nickname "Red Tails" was coined. Bomber crews applied a more effusive "Red-Tail Angels" sobriquet.

Tuskegee Airmen

The City of Long Beach is very fortunate to have a collection of military history on the Tuskegee Airmen. The African American Resource Center at Burnett Library has books, a movie and documentaries about the Tuskegee Airmen. The collection includes the documentary about the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony for the airmen in Washington, D.C. The Long Beach Branch NAACP thanks its life-member, Macy Herrington, and her late husband, Aaron Herrington, who was a Tuskegee Airmen. You are encouraged to go see the current movie Redtails to learn more about the Tuskegee Airmen.
