Cultural Diversity Month

In October the City of Long Beach Celebrates the strength of our diversity during Cultural Diversity Month. Though we are surrounded by diversity on a daily basis, this month is set aside as a special time to reflect on the many aspects of cultural diversity.

5 Things You Can Do

Ways you can learn from difference, connect commonalities and build a stronger community:

#1 Get to know a neighbor better and how (s)he came to Long Beach
#2 Hold a cultural potluck at your workplace or on your block.
#3 Model respect and be an ally when you see or hear bigotry.
#4 Promote tolerance, acceptance, and appreciation
#5 Pledge to learn more about others who are different from you.

Cultural diversity encompasses not just racial diversity, but also the diversity represented by identities of nationality, religion/faith, sexual orientation, gender, age, and disabiltiy status.

Get to Know Someone

Questions you can ask to break the ice and learn more about others around you:

- What is your favorite holiday and why?
- Where were you born?
- When was the first time you realized you were a member of your race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or ability cultural group?
- As a child, what messages were you given about how members of your cultural group expressed emotions like ahppiness, anger, and sadness?
- ...what messages were you given about education, work, and community involvement?
- What does "culture" mean to you?
- What does "diversity" mean to you?

I'm proud of the many ways people here work together. How we express our unified sense of community is a model for others to follow. I am Long Beach...and so are you.
