
Presenting Books at City Council Meeting
The Long Beach Branch NAACP presented books recording the history of African Americans in Long Beach, at the City Council Meeting on July 8 at 5 pm. Eleanore Schmidt, Director of Library Services, was there to accept the book donations. The books being donated were "Untold Legacies", compiled by the National Council of Negro Women. The McBride family donated "Fighting for the People", and autobiographical account of the political history of Black Long Beach by Ernest McBride, Sr., civil rights activist and union organizer, the story of a man who caused change. "The Heritage of African Americans in Long Beach: Over 100 Years", published by the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach, edited by Aaron Day and Indira Hale Tucker has been presented as well. This is the first book about the Black Community in Long Beach, which we all call "glimpses of an awesome past." It includes new excerpts, early census records of African Americans in Long Beach, selected city directory information, and many profiles of pioneers, community leaders, churhces community organizations, and businesses.
"Breaking Through, Lighting the Way" profiles 12 African American women who made a difference in Long Beach history. This book is a part of the history and is available at the libraries.
The Long Beach Branch NAACP encourages members of the community to purchase and check-out these books from our city libraries to learn and gain more knowledge regarding the history and contributions made by African Americans, past and present, to the city.
